AI Runs Systems. Humans Lead People.
On last week’s Embrace the Squiggle podcast, Kristine and I talked about a client frozen by the fear that AI might take over his job. Our takeaway? AI isn’t here to replace humans, it’s here to change how we work. And those who resist using it risk falling behind.
But here’s the thing: AI can automate tasks, not lead people.
The most effective leaders today aren’t the most technical, they’re the most human. They lead with curiosity, adaptability, trust, compassion, and attunement.
Attunement is one of those subtle but powerful skills that separates managers from truly impactful leaders. It is the ability to be deeply aware of and responsive to the emotions, needs, and cues of others and the basis for human-centered leadership. It’s about tuning in and not just listening to what someone says, but also noticing their body language, tone, and what might be going unsaid.
We all want to be and work for a leader who
notices when a team member is on the verge of being burned out
adjusts communication to meet people where they are
creates space for quieter voices and unique perspectives
reads the energy of a room and responds according
Real leadership is built on trust, clarity, confidence, and connection. It’s knowing your strengths, giving feedback with intention, delegating thoughtfully, and navigating hard conversations with confidence.
AI may speed up the what of our work—but the how and why? That still belongs to us.
